How We Test

Updated 2 min read 7 sections

Every guide on Ready for Ten starts with a simple question: which product would we buy with our own money? To answer it, we research the category, test shortlisted products in real-world use, and compare them using the same criteria every time.

Our goal is to make recommendations that are practical, transparent, and useful. That means showing you how we test, what we look for, and what we think the downsides are so you can decide whether a product is right for you.

How we choose what to test

We begin by researching the whole category. That includes manufacturer specifications, long-term owner reviews, return-rate patterns, and recall notices. This helps us build a shortlist of the products most worth testing.

Sponsored placements never decide what makes the list.

How we test products

Shortlisted products are used the way you would use them at home — in real kitchens and living rooms, for days or weeks, not minutes. We aim to understand how a product performs in everyday use, not just in a quick demonstration.

We also photograph products during testing. The photos in our “Hands-on tested” boxes are our own, not stock images.

How we score products

Each category has fixed criteria. These may include performance, ease of use, build quality, noise, and value, depending on the product type.

Every product gets a score from 0 to 10 for each criterion. The overall score reflects how much each criterion matters to most buyers, so the final rating is designed to be practical, not arbitrary.

How we write our reviews

We try to make each review balanced and useful. That means we explain what a product does well, but we also spell out what could be better.

No product is perfect. If a weakness may matter to you, we think it should be stated clearly.

How we keep guides up to date

We re-check our picks regularly and replace products that are discontinued or out of stock. When recommendations change, we note what changed at the top of the guide.

We only change the “Updated” date when the recommendations or testing actually changed.

Who leads testing

Testing is led by Karl D. McGrath.

Do sponsored products affect your rankings?

No. Sponsored placements do not decide what makes the shortlist or how products are ranked.

How long do you test products for?

We test shortlisted products in real-world conditions for days or weeks, depending on the product and category.

Are your product photos original?

Yes. The photos in our “Hands-on tested” boxes are taken during our own testing.

How often do you update your guides?

We re-check picks regularly and update guides when recommendations change or when products become discontinued or out of stock.

What should I do if I have a question about a review?

You can email Karl D. McGrath at karldmcgrath@gmail.com.
